Dark and low cu's all morning with a brisk wind, but later in the afternoon the wind abates and the clouds began to break up. Competitors had repeated launches, as they tried to get away. Finally they started dribbling away under skies with lots of cu's and scud. No one made the goal 77... mehr

Great cumulus development. One pilot not in the meet started first at 1:30 PM and flew to his personal best at 275 KM. It would have been possible to start at 10 AM this morning. mehr

Jonny was Skyping me this morning saying that it looked like he missed a 600 km day. His dad was reporting cu's at 7 AM at Beechmont. Yesterday when Jonny started he left at 9 AM because there weren't any cu's until then. Here this morning the cu's started early and were streeted up most of the morning. The pilots here at Dalby were tracking Jonny on the radio. They heard from him when he was twenty minutes out from Dalby at 1:20 PM, but they already knew that he had launched from Beechmont at 9 AM. Warren Simonsen launched an hour later.

Jonny was on TV last night and Belinda caught him while the rest of us missed it while out at the hangar at the Dalby airport. Belinda said they had shots of him flying around Beechmont (there were two news helicopters out there) and a very nice interview with him on the launch. On Thursday we drove west from Brisbane on the A2 (another major highway that consists of a two lane road once you get away from the urban areas) under cloudy skies. A quick call to Jonny Durand and we found out that he hadn't gone flying as it was already dark with low cu's at 6:30 AM. So his 517 km record will stand for a while longer.
