Going to Dalby

On Thursday we drove west from Brisbane on the A2 (another major highway that consists of a two lane road once you get away from the urban areas) under cloudy skies. A quick call to Jonny Durand and we found out that he hadn't gone flying as it was already dark with low cu's at 6:30 AM. So his 517 km record will stand for a while longer.

The cu's began to break up a little as we approached the Great Dividing Range and Toowoomba. The land is strange at this point. You are in low lands and facing the range to the west. You can see houses up at the top of the range in among the trees. You climb up a 10% grade and when you get to the top there you are at Toowoomba which sits on "flat" ground, a gently westward sloping plateau, no quick down slope on the western side as you would expect normally from a mountain range.  Just valley, quick rise, plateau. No wonder pilots fly over this spot to go on their long flights west.

The cu's were still much lower than on Wednesday and a lot thicker and congested as we headed west to Dalby. No rain or anything like that. It has been flooding to the north with roads and rail cut to Cairns for a day or two. The tropical low has moved north a bit. Blue so far today on Friday.
