While at the pre-Worlds I spoke with Richard Lovelace, UK competition pilot. Richard was a witness to Richi Meier's accident. Contrary to earlier repots (see link above), Richard states that Richi had plenty of altitude to throw his chute, that he wasn't too close to the mountain. In addition, as I recall, Richard...

He has a chance at the Swift record. Will he beat Gary's ultra light sailplane record set yesterday? I'll update the Oz Report as soon as I hear.
Robin holds the current official Swift world record at 715 km (http://records.fai.org/hang_gliding/current.asp?id1=o-2&id2=1). 444 miles. But Manfred has the unofficial record at 483 miles...

Dustin says that he just couldn't climb the extra 2000' that he needed in the last thermal to get to this special cloud north of Big Spring. The cloud was still there at 9:45 PM (in the dark) and had turned into a storm. He said that if he had made it to the cloud he would still be in the air.
The sheriff found Gary and he was in the patrol car...

Dustin didn't quite break the almost unbreakable record. He no doubt went over 400 miles. More soon.
Gary is putting away the glider in a barn and leaving a note for the farmer. The sheriff is going to drive him to Crosbyton so that he can stay the night there. He'll get a plane ride out of there tomorrow.
He said the highest he got was 11,000'....

Gary Osoba landed his Woodstock light sailplane at 7:30 PM at Cone, Texas. That would make it by a rough distance calculation, 487 miles, which we believe may be the new world record for a light sailplane. Gary claims the Woodstock gets about 25:1 glide ratio. A forecast is fine, reality is better. Be prepared to go and see what reality brings. That's the lesson here in Zapata, while Dustin goes...
