Dustin says that he just couldn't climb the extra 2000' that he needed in the last thermal to get to this special cloud north of Big Spring. The cloud was still there at 9:45 PM (in the dark) and had turned into a storm. He said that if he had made it to the cloud he would still be in the air.

The sheriff found Gary and he was in the patrol car heading to Crosbyton.

Dustin was sounding pretty good and hoping for a room at the Whitten In in Big Spring (I think that it has a new name, new owners, and is full of refinery workers).
