Honolulu Hawaii Makapu'u Beach Paragliders- 4/21/08
Day after Kawaii Kon 2008 ended, Emily, Tavi and Rikki (of Shutterbox manga and voice of Gir fame), and I took a trip together around Honolulu.
Near the end of the day we stopped at a rest area, slight south of Makapu'u Beach, just after spotting a few paragliders.
Once in a while they'd, as you'll see, swoop in and give a show for the rest stop audience. Funniest moment- near the end of the video, one of the gliders unintentionally sneaks up on an unsuspecting rest area visitor that sends them screaming.
Tavi, as she points out, a third glider popped out of nowhere. Rikki asks where are they coming from, and is answered with another great Rikki question, "Maybe the mountains are giving birth to them?"
Camera and editing are created by me. Dialog by our GPS, Tavi, and Rikki, who are in the shots. Em wasn't feeling to good and she stayed back in the car.

Paragliding Butterfly Valley - Oludeniz
Paraglider flight from Babadag (1800m north take-off) into Butterfly Valley. Quite a committing but straight forward flight. About halfway there is the point of no return, its the beach or the sea! Got there with plenty of height though.
I managed to fly there with a large rock in the right hand side of my glider (un-beknown to me until I landed).... Those take offs need sorting out..... mats would be nice!
Butterfly valley is a really chilled place frequented by hippies..... spent a few hours there in the sun, drinking beer, listening to Bob Marley and snorkelling.
My wife met me there having got the boat over from Oludeniz and it was a cheap 10TYL (£2.50) boat trip back.
Don't forget to pack your mask & snorkel in your harness (did look a bit odd on the top of the mountain though)
This is a must do flight!

Wingovers above Newhaven
A poorly shot clip of me flying wingovers over Newhaven cliffs, near brighton. Unfortunately, while i was messing about I failed to noticed that the wind direction had shifted, leaving me with insufficient height to make it back to Newhaven beach. I landed on the boulder littered shore below.. We live and learn!

Flying along the Newhaven cliffs on a quiet Saturday morning. Unfortunately this was taken just I bombed out in a sinking headwind. Tricky landing in the boulder field below, not mention the long walk back to Newhaven beach.

Found my dad`s 8mm films, from the early 1975. When Hangliding started in Bodoe, and most parts in Norway on that time.

A Dreamy Hazy Day at Newhaven
The cliffs at Newhaven when the wind and tide are right make for a really great place to fly. The rhythm of waves upon the rocky shoreline, the pale quality of the light, the scent of fresh seawater and the shared presence of seabirds (and even the odd bird of prey) work together to weave a kind of magic. I had high hopes of going all the way to Brighton, but it became apparent that the wind was slowly easing. By the time I got to the Saltdean Gap it was clear I simply didn't have the height, even after a few beats along the cliff face, which did give me a bit of lift ...... but not enough and I wasn't going to chance it. The digital helmet cam also decided it was time to stop filming, so the movie ends abruptly just before the Gap. I made it back, but it got increasingly scratchy towards the end when I landed on the pebble beach near the car. Some didn't and the boulders claimed a broken leg of one unlucky pg pilot - I'm not sure how it happened. The line between serenity and harsh reality can be stark. But serene it was on this flight and it more than compensated for a gridlocked motorway on the way home.
