Hatcher Pass & Independence Mine
The clouds converge on Hatcher Pass and the abandoned Independence Gold Mine. At its peak in 1941, Independence Mine produced 34,416 ounces of gold worth $1,204,560 ($17,208,000 today). In 1951 the mine was closed. In the late 1970s, 271 acres of land were designated Independence Mine State Historical Park.

Rutschblock Test - Hatcher Pass
Meg stepping out onto our rutschblock test block. The rutschblock is a block of snow 2 meters wide and 1.5 meters deep. The back wall is cut away from the snow behind it using a string with knots. A person then steps out onto the block and the ease with which it slides indicates the stability of the layers in the block. This block is quite unstable.

Not too far from Anchorage and just north of Palmer, Alaska, you'll find Hatcher Pass. This classicly epic region is located on the edge of the Talkeetna Mountains and the northern edge of the Matanuska Valley. It is, to put it bluntly, some of the most beautiful landscape I've ever crossed, much less witnessed.
This is by far one of my favorite elements of Alaska thus far. A place I'll be coming back to again and again.

Climbing Hatcher Pass
This clip features a new attraction on our 2010 tours (not published yet). This video was taken at the end of September so there is snow on the ground. John Hall's Alaska guests will not cross Hatcher Pass but will tours the mines located just south of the pass and have a nice lunch close by.
