The Muse and the Maestro!
Italian composer Ennio Morricone flipped the script on 1960's film soundtracks. Out went the syrupy strings, in came radical arrangements, instruments, and textures. The otherworldly voice heralding many of these avant arias belonged to Edda Dell'Orso. Ennio worked in many styles to reflect the 400 hundred movies he scored, and his own restless resolve to try new things. Edda could roll with anything he threw her way. His 'spaghetti westerns' ricocheted with rough chants, surf clang, jews harps, and whistling: Edda soared into eternity on the magnificently operatic "The Ecstasy of Gold" (THE GOOD, THE BAD, & THE UGLY). For thrillers, he blendered abrasive and feverish avant-garde soundscapes; Edda hyperventilated gasps somewhere between orgasm and strangulation, at once alluring and disturbing (SHORT NIGHT OF THE GLASS DOLLS). For romantic romps, he served a breezy lounge cocktail of pop and jazz sensuality; Edda's seductive and upbeat scatting and tonal scales set the template for Stereolab, Hooverphonic, and Pizzicato 5 to follow. This song, for the 1971 film "THE BURGLERS", is in that realm. She worked with all the great Italian composers, like Nicolai, Umiliani, and Piccioni as well. Check out more of her steller work here:

Rudi Gernreich was the iconoclast of 1960's fashion. He tore out the binding constrictions that strangled womens' clothing, and made everything fluid and flowing with the form. He invented the topless bikini, portals in clothes, the use of vinyl and plastic, the concept of unisex, the first designer jean, and the thong. But his best gambit was the unclassifiable Peggy Moffitt. Models before had been fembots parading armor dresses with classic femininity. Peggy upended all of that. She was a performance artist, turning each vogue into an individual character. She evolved into a persona that made her seem from the far future; this was true, because Rudi and she were inventing it as they went. Her kabuki eye makeup, helmut bowlcut, mime shapes, gender-ending manner, mischievous pluck, and intense presence tore up the rulebook on female appearance, behaviour, and attitude. Her bold style had immediate effect on the times from Cher to Spock. Her alien androgeny set the stage for Bowie's Ziggy Stardust several years later. Her mercurial nature and fierce eyemakeup opened the way for Siousiee Sioux and many a New Wave novitiate in the 80's. And her boundless physicality and hairstyle anticipated Karen O (Yeah Yeah Yeahs) today. Between them Rudi and Peggy wrote much of the future we live in. "Devil Women, Vampiras, and other Bad Girls!"
VAMPIRELLA was the synthesis of Bettie Page and Barbarella, created by monster maestro Forrest Ackerman in 1969, when demonic dommes, sapphic succubi, and wayward wiccans terrorized cinemas, drive-ins, comics, paperbacks, and fantasies worldwide: from Jess Franco films like the immortal Soledad Miranda in VAMPYROS LESBOS ('71); to bucket-of-blood Hammer Films starring Christopher Lee as Dracula; to the chilling heights of Linda Blair in THE EXORCIST ('73). Early 70's pop culture was a potent brew of hedonism, rebellion, exploitation, camp, and lurid shock, and Vampi stirred it all up.
As star of her own adult-themed magazine, the brakes were off for her to be as nasty as she wanted to be. The subject matter was intense, and the art by such as Frank Frazetta and Jose Gonzalez set a new standard. Vampi became the template for global imitations, each even more perverse than the previous. Portuagal unleashed ZAKARELLA, one moment naked nymph and the next ramming spears up men's asanines; Marvel Comics put their stakes in SATANA, The Devil's Daughter, and LILITH, Daughter of Dracula (US); Italian erotic comics (fumetti) handed off JACULA the vampire; Atlas Comics flipped the script when a cover of DEVILINA was so good that VAMPIRELLA re-used it! (US); YRA put the serious lust in bloodlust, using men and women and discarding them (Italy); SUKIA had her own ways of getting a head in a man's world (Italy); ZARAN The Vampire...; not to be confused with ZARA The Vampire, although she confused herself with Vampi on this cover (Italy); as did the most nefarious of all, LUCIFERA, whose costume was simply a wicked leer and who committed what could be the ultimate Bad Girl act by fellatin' Satan (Italy); there was a lascivious rip-off of Snow White called BIANCANEVE, and MAGHELLA was a more sinful rip-off of her, taking on wicked witches and all comers (Italy/France); and by the early 80's there was the new-wave vampira, ULULA (Italy). Beyond this were demon queens, warrior amazons, and animal hybrids, on covers from France to the Phillipines to beneath mattresses.
All of this was the end result of repressed desires constrained by religion, producing archetypes through time that had reached critical mass. The ambivilent mess of sorting out sexist stereotypes from liberationist icons still clashes, overlaps and morphs to this day. This is why we have the revised VAMPIRELLA and PANTHA comics, comics hellions from DARK PHOENIX and EMMA FROST to DEATH and LADY DEATH, the DRUUNA series, the Devil Babes art of Isabel Samaras and Devil Girls of Coop, TV shows like BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER and CHARMED, films like THE CROW and THE CRAFT and UNDERWORLD, role-playing games like VAMPIRE: THE MASQUERADE, The Damned and Goth music, the style of The SUICIDE GIRLS, and The DEVIL LADY in anime and manga.
About ENNIO & EDDA: Morricone is 'The Maestro' of Italian cinema, legendary for varied and expiremental scores. His operatic angel was Edda Dell'Orso, whose unearthly lilt lit up his work. She was omnipotent, from soaring arias (westerns), to bubbly lounge scat (sexy comedies), to gasping sobs between fear and orgasm (thrillers). Her stellar work graced the scores of all Italy's great composers in the 60's. Her influence can be heard today in Julee Cruise, Stereophonic, Portishead, Mono, Goldfrapp, and the Pizzicato 5. This track is actually two pieces from the film "Faccia a Faccia", a 1967 western.

Sergio Leone followed his 'Dollars' trilogy and the epic "ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST" with this ambitious and sometimes abstract western comedy.
Ennio took moments to make fun of all the musical conventions he'd invented for westerns, now rife in every other composer's arsenal. Film fans will immediately recognize it from its use in "KILL BILL, Vol. 1". His "Summertime Killer" theme was used in "KILL BILL, Vol. 2".
The harp is Franco De Gemini ("The Man With the Harmonica", ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST). The ethereal vocal is of course the angelic soprano, Edda Dell'Orso.
