Ottilia paragliding into the landing strip Cerro Otto Argentina January 2008
Cerro Otto near Bariloche, Argentina where Ottilia and I paraglided 800 meters in 30 minutes overlooking the Andes and the lake. That´s Ottilia "running on empty";if you watch carefully you´ll see what I mean.

Standing in Motion
O vôo livre encanta o homem desde a mitologia grega com Ícaro, porém, foi por volta de 1871 que o alemão Otto Liliental construia planadores os quais ele próprio testava, vindo a realizar mais de 2000 vôos em sua vida.
Faleceu em um acidente em 1896.
No final da segunda guerra mundial Francis Rogallo passa a estudar um novo tipo de asa que não era rígida.
Rogallo defendia a idéia de que as asas flexíveis eram mais estáveis.
Seus primeiros trabalhos ele realiza em casa, com sua esposa Gertrude, e para isso teve de instalar grandes ventiladores em sua sala. Em 1951 Rogallo e sua esposa
nesta época, a Nasa estava buscando uma forma de reintroduzir suas cápsulas espaciais na atmosfera através de um pára-quedas direcionável. A invenção de Rogallo deu origem ao projeto denominado PARASEV (Paraglider Rescue Vehicle).
No Centro de Investigação Langley, na Virgínia, Rogallo estuda a estrutura metálica das asas flexíveis, que nesta época ficavam apoiadas em um triciclo, que era rebocado por um avião. Uma vez em vôo, desconectava e seguia o vôo planando até o solo.
Em Grapton, na Austrália, John Dickenson ouve falar da asa de Rogallo e desenha sua própria asa, que foi construida com varas de bambu e vela de plástico, que mais tarde seriam substituídos pelo alumínio e nylon. Em 1963 realiza o primeiro vôo rebocado por um barco.
Porém, o primeiro desenho de uma asa delta como conhecemos atualmente se deve a Al Hartig, em 1966. Ele a batizou de Valkyrie.
Bill Moyes, em 1968 foi o primeiro a voar no lift, também com uma asa do tipo Rogallo, na Austrália.

São fotos incríveis, de uma época onde VOAR era mais importante que a própria segurança dos pilotos.
Em 1974 o vôo livre chega ao Brasil através do francês Stephan Dunoyer que realizou a primeira decolagem no Cristo Redetor e também realizou vários vôos em diversar cidades do Brasil.
O primeiro brasileiro a voar foi o carioca Luis Claudio Mattos. O primeiro brasileiro a conquistar um campeonato mundial foi Pedro Paulo Lopes, o Pepê, em 1981, no Japão.
Em Santa Maria, Lucas Rubinger, um dos pioneiros no RJ, chega em 1985 e inicia aulas com uma turma de apaixonados pelo vôo. Lucas teve um papel importante, pois deixou plantada a semente do vôo em várias cidades do estado.
