Flight: Dallas to West Texas
A flight from Dallas (Addison) across West Texas to Midland. From Midland we flew 150 miles west to the Guadalupe Mountains, although they were consumed in clouds and rain. We then flew back to Midland and on home to Dallas. We crossed Abilene, Wind Farms, Midland/Odessa, Monahans Sand Hills, the Pecos, and the Guadalupe Mountains.

Hang Playing in the Guadalupe Mtns. El Capitan
Playing hang drum (improvising) in McKittrick Canyon in the Guadalupe Mountains in far west Texas. Behind is El Capitan, an ancient limestone reef part of the Permian Basin an ancient ocean. Evidence of human life goes back over 12,000 with the Mescalero Apaches much later, then ranchers, etc. Now it is a beautiful National Park.
I look terrible so be kind. I was just returning from a 2-day funeral, no sleep and very harsh sunlight.

A trip my dad and I took to Guadalupe Mt. in May, 2007. He wanted to go to the top after hearing pics/descriptions of what I saw when I went up there in May, 2006. Unfortunately, the morning of the hike it was raining buckets in Carlsbad, NM. But the Weather Channel said it would get better, the park rangers said it would get better, however, Guadalupe Mountain had other ideas...

For the first time a Guadalupe Mountains cave extends deep enough that scientists may study five separate geologic formations from the inside. The profusion of gypsum and sulfur lends support to speleogenesis by sulfuric acid dissolution. Rare, chemolithoautotrophic bacteria are believed to occur in the cave. These bacteria feed on the sulfur, iron, and manganese minerals and may assist in enlarging the cave and determining the shapes of some unusual speleothems. Other studies indicate that some microbes may have medicinal qualities that are beneficial to humans.
