Sicily 2007 - Eolian Islands Milazzo 1
I love studying languages and prefer to do it locally on site, in a foreign country. After having completed several language study trips to study Spanish, it was time to learn Italian! So in April of 2007 I embarked on 3 weeks of language studies to Sicily, and I discovered one of the most beautiful spots on this planet. I spent the first week in Taormina, a gorgeous hillside town on the east coast of Sicily and went on excursions to Siracusa and Mt. Etna, Sicily's famous active volcano. All along I enjoyed student life at the local Babilonia Language School in Taormina.
After week 1 I relocated to Milazzo where I joined another language school, Laboratorio Linguistico. Together with 4 other language students and 2 language teachers I embarked on a one week sailing trip through the gorgeous Eolian Islands. This was my first sailing trip and a true adventure. Luckily I had great crew mates, and studying Italian on the outdoor patio of a bar on a beautiful Mediterranean island quickly became one of my favourite activities.
Then I had a few more days left and explored local gems like Milazzo, Cefalu, Catania and small villages in the beautiful interior of Sicily. And best of all, by the end of it I spoke reasonably fluent Italian at intermediate level!
Sicily was a phenomenal experience -- and I am already dreaming of going back...

Milazzo e San Filippo del Mela private delle centraline "pubbliche" per il controllo degli inquinamenti!
Le attività industriali presenti nel Comprensorio del Mela hanno alterato, in maniera praticamente irreversibile, lo stato dell'Ambiente e, quindi, della Salute dei Cittadini. Proprio la stato di salute deriva dalla interazione dell'uomo con l'ambiente in cui vive ed opera.
Gli amministratori, pubblici e privati, devono applicare il "principio di precauzione" come ben sancito nell'Agenda 21, il che significa "protezione dell'ambiente e della salute ancor prima che venga stabilita una relazione certa causa-effetto sulla pericolosità di una sostanza".L'inutile polemica su veri o falsi fumi che siano quelli prodotti dalla Centrale Edipower,ancora una volta appare come una strategia industriale che vuole solo sminuire decenni di disastri ambientali che, ormai,fa parte della nostra vita quotidiana.Rammentiamo ai responsabili delle industrie che di molte sostanze visibili o invisibili ci è nota l'azione tossica ma di molte non ne conosciamo nemmeno la reale concentrazione perché le autorità competenti nulla hanno fatto per indagare e, poi, pubblicizzare, tali rilevanti informazioni.La Sezione di Milazzo del WWF ha appreso che sulla Gazzetta Ufficiale della Regione Sicilia n. 20 del 9/5/08 è stato pubblicato il decreto di revoca dei finanziamenti a favore dei comuni di Milazzo e San Filippo del Mela per la realizzazione di una "Rete di centraline per il monitoraggio dei fattori inquinanti" e per la realizzazione di un "Ecosportello e catasto emissioni", disimpegnando la somma totale di 1.550.000 euro!I Cittadini devono sapere che la mancanza di prove certe di tossicità e/o di danni ambientali ed i livelli minimi di inquinamento atmosferico (non solo i picchi occasionali) non possono più essere una giustificazione per non intervenire e per non informare dei rischi.Il nostro Comprensorio viene, ancora una volta, privato di un importantissimo ed indispensabile strumento per l'accertamento della situazione ambientale: le centraline di rilevamento degli inquinamenti atmosferici!E' evidente, allora, il perché le industrie tendano a mistificare e/o nascondere la realtà dei fumi e delle emissioni in genere, visto che i Cittadini hanno a disposizione solo le informazioni provenienti dalla loro "rete privata di centraline".Con la revoca di questi importanti finanziamenti, la Regione ha messo le amministrazioni locali in condizione di perdere autorevolezza, etica e fiducia nei confronti degli abitanti del Comprensorio.La Sezione di Milazzo del WWF si interroga sul perché sia stata dimostrata così poca attenzione nei confronti degli abitanti del Comprensorio del Mela, sul come mai le amministrazioni locali non siano riuscite a garantire la realizzazione dei progetti in questione, sul perché l'area a rischio sia stata privata del basilare strumento di indagine ed informazione.La Sezione di Milazzo del WWF avvierà, nei prossimi giorni, adeguata campagna di sensibilizzazione, a livello nazionale, per l'applicazione del "principio di precauzione", anche informando dei rischi che si corrono facendo i "turisti" nella nostra zona, vista la scarsa attenzione nei confronti dei residenti!
