| Benbulben Dartry Mountain County Sligo Ireland |
Benbulben Mountain - My Last 100 Steps
Here are the last 100 steps that I took while climbing Benbulben at the west end of the Dartry Mountains in north County Sligo, Ireland. I did this on September 1, 2008.
From the moment I saw this face of the mountain I was in awe. It ended up following me around for days, it was in the background of the Carrowmore burial site, as well as Sliabh Liag, way over on the other side of Donegal Bay.
I had to see how high I could get climbing it, so up it I went. It would be suicide to try to climb all the way up, at least without proper gear, as the slope gets more and more steep as you go up. I just had me, my videocam, and some basic boots, so I definately was not geared up for real mountain climbing.
Summer 2008 has been very wet in Ireland and the sod was soaking wet. Wet grass has some grip but wet rock can be slippery, and one bad step would be all it would take. So up front I told myself not to go any higher than what I felt comfortable with.
I started the video at 900 steps past the gate, and stopped at 1,000. That's as close to the top as I got! Next time I plan to go at least to 1,100 steps past the gate, but next time I'll be wearing shoes with cleats. And I won't make the mistake again of looking down before I'm ready to start heading back.

The isle of Innisfree - poem by W.B. Yeats:
I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree,
And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made:
Nine bean-rows will I have there, a hive for the honeybee,
And live alone in the bee-loud glade.
And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow
Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings;
There midnight's all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow,
And evenings full of the linnet's wings.
I will arise and go now, for always night and day
I hear the lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore;
While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements gray,
I hear it in the deep heart's core.

And, to round off, in the words of W.B. Yeats:
Once every people in the world believed that trees were divine, and could take a human or grotesque shape and dance among the shadows; and that deer, and ravens and foxes, and wolves and bears, and clouds and pools, almost all things under the sun and moon, and the sun and moon, were not less divine and changeable. They saw in the rainbow the still-bent bow of a god thrown down in his negligence; they heard in the thunder the sound of his beaten water jar, or the tumult of his chariot wheels; and when a sudden flight of wild ducks, or of crows, passed over their heads, they thought they were gazing at the dead hastening to their rest....

| Sligo ITS "IT Sligo" ITSLIGO SLIGO" "Sligo IT" "Institute of Technology" "Aerial photography" UAV "John Carter" |
A quick flight round ITS
It's ITS - the Institute of Technology, Sligo. This film was made using one of our prototype UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle).
We've added annotations to the film to show the ITS building names and some local items - hospital, Clarion hotel, Benbulben etc.
The film is still very jerky and we are taking the following engineering steps to improve it:
- slower aircraft - new design with lower wing loading
- gyro stabilization
- practising our flying and filming and editing techniques
I think this experiment at least shows that low-cost unmanned aerial photography is becoming feasible and is likely to have useful and novel application. Last term, a group of our first year software engineering students came up with several interesting new ideas.
It seems to me that ITS's science, engineering, technology, design and computing staff and students possess the kind of abilities useful in developing such ideas (rather than just managing or commenting on them), and creating solutions that actually change things.
We would be grateful for any correspondence in this.
John Carter
