Austria 2008 - Walking Down the Main Street of Birkfeld
So I had gone on another trip back to my birth country of Austria. After relaxing for one day after my arrival, on May 2, 2008 I started the day with a trip to an organic farm with my brother, an avid gardner who, as an expert chef, turns his home-grown treasures into delicious and nutritious meals. In the afternoon I went on a driving tour through my native region of Styria, a province on the eastern side of Austria. I drove to the village of Puch, famous for its apple and peach orchards. From there I went on to the mountain of Kulm, an ancient volcano and location of a pre-historic Celtic village. On the mountain I watched and interviewed the paragliders who went soaring over the rolling hills of East Styria. On from there I continued into the mountain villages of Anger and Birkfeld past a mountain pass in the Mürz Valley. There I stopped at the historic town of Bruck an der Mur, a significant commercial centre in the area with an expansive main square, framed by historic buildings. My last stop on this tour was the quaint market town of Frohnleiten, perched on the banks of the River Mur, which has some of the most picturesque main squares in all of Styria.

The summer is now swinging along nicely. The weather is warm, the skies are clear and each week brings new activities and events.
This week James reports from the bottom of the Flegere lift station as the Brevent lift is closed all summer for upgrade and this is the new launch pad of choice for the paragliding school Summits in Chamonix.
The weekend ahead focuses on mountain transport in the valley with the opening of the Grand Montets lifts and celebrations to commemorate the one hundredth anniversary of the railway line that runs between Chamonix and Vallorcine, with outdoor entertainment, children's games, street shows, giant tartiflette and a variety of music.

The Great Clark Trip a ka Weekend of Everything That Flies
February 11, 2007 -- The Driving Queens (plus Nikki and Justin) went to Pampanga for the 11th Hot Air Balloon Expo in Clark Air Base. It was dubbed as The Weekend of Everything That Flies, which was pretty cool as it had, not just the air balloons, but paragliding, kites, and an aviation exhibit from the old air base. There were also car shows and street markets.
Me and the girls got to ride the SM-Toyota Balloon for free (out of sheer charm, haha), and the Night Glow was beautiful. No pictures, tho. My camera died. Ah well.

Today, I got to soar in a high performance sailplane with an FAA Certificated Commercial Instructor. We were aerotowed up to 6,500ft above sea level. There's also a mile high tow (5,280ft) to almost 9,000ft above sea level.
Bill, my instructor, flew the sailplane while on tow. He offered to let me fly the aircraft once we were released from the tow plane but, I declined because I wanted to video record the experience so that anyone interested in taking a flight can get an idea of what they can expect. What you can expect is freedom, exhilaration, peace, and quiet, and a fantastic eagle's eye view of tree lines running along mountain ridges, long stretches of state highway, rural towns, farm lands, and the vast expanse of the valley floor beneath you.
I have a minor phobia about heights. But, I felt completely safe and secured. Many modern sailplanes have a glide ratio of 40:1. That's a far higher ratio then any commercial powered aircraft or even a paraglider.
The school is a family run business, operated by Yvonne and her grandfather. I believe they have been in operations since 1960. If you're in the neighborhood, drop by and say hi to the crew. They're really nice people too.
