Help Hungary! : Swedish fundraising of 1956
"Hjälp Ungern!" (Help Hungary!) Swedish Radio's national fundraising for emergency aid to Hungary during the Soviet invasion of 1956. Thís was one of a number of promotional documentary reports about the refugee situation made by Svensk Filmindustir (SF) for Swedish national radio's fundraising.
Report from the border crossing at Nickelsdorf, Austria - "between Austria and the no man's land controlled by Russia". Hungarian refugees are received by the Swedish Red Cross and transported by bus to a refugee camp outside Nickelsdorf. Hungarian "freedom fighters" arrives and give up their fire arms, including a captured Russian tank and Russian made machine guns. Pictures from the airport in Vienna where the international aid for Hungary is transfered. Back to Nickelsdorf, a Red Cross truck is returning "at the last minute" as the border crossing is closed. Later, an the Red Cross aid convoy is returning from its mission to Budapest. On its way back, the aid officers are said to have been temporary detained by Russian troops. The offcers of the convoy at a press conference in Vienna. The film ends with more refugees returning and a final plea to support the Hungarians.
"Even if we cannot supply aid in Hungary, we can at least help those who came from it. Thousands of people who have fled the supression and terror, who left their distroyed country in the hands of the thugs." "People who have lost everything, who cannot forget, but yet have to live. We too can support them."
