Baptism at Eshowe in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
CESLA quite often works in association with FBO's in South Africa, as they are often uniquely placed, so that resources are utilized where needs are greatest. At one of the AIDS orphan "feeding stations" near Eshowe, KwaZulu-Natal where CESLA lends a helping hand (along with food resources), we were asked to assist with the baptism of 67 Zulu teenagers. CESLA's Executive Director personally took care of a baptism party and supplied each teenager with an isiZulu translation Bible and pictorial page placeholders commemoration the event.
These are pictures of the baptism that took place in Eshowe in a backyard pool. This was the first pool any of these rural teenagers had ever been in.

To gain an insight into the Zulus' former traditional way of life, one should visit the open-air museum "Shakaland" near Eshowe. It is the oldest "Zulu Cultural Village" in Zululand, originally built as a scenery for the movie "Shaka Zulu". Shakaland is beautifully situated in the Entembeni hills with a wide view of the bushland and the quiet Pobane lake.
Visitors can - by appointment - take part in a guided tour of the Zulu village, where Chief Malinga and his family live. The traditional "Umuzi" consists of several Zulu round-huts building a circle around the cattle kraal. During the tour the social system and the way of life of the Zulus explained, their rites and costums and the meaning of their clothes and ornaments. Their fighting technique and various crafts are being demonstrated. Afterwards one can taste the Zulu beer and join in a traditional meal.

The amaNazarites of Isaiah Shembe
From wikipedia: Nazareth Baptist Church (Alternatively called "The Nazarite Church" "amaNazareta", or the "Shembe Church") is an African Initiated Church founded by Isaiah Shembe in 1910. It has approximately a million members in KwaZulu-Natal and Inanda. The religion bans smoking, drinking, fornicating, dating, and keeping dogs and cats as pets. It also forbids shaving and believes in faith-healing. It is seen as a mixture of Zulu tradition and Christianity. It reveres Isaiah Shembe as an African Messiah and emphasizes the Ten Commandments.[1]
It has been divided into two groups since the 1976 death of Bishop Johannes Galilee Shembe. The larger group was led by Bishop Amos Shembe until his death in 1996, while the Rt. Rev. Londa Shembe led the smaller group.[2]
They also hold a month-long celebration near Eshowe every year in November, where up to 25,000 members gather to receive the blessings of Shembe.
When I was in South Africa I was brought to this church to attend a 3 and half hour service outside in the mid-day sun. What you see her goes on after the service to celebrate.

Vid filmed in the "bundoo" of KwaZulu/Natal (in the Eshowe area). The woman isn't truly a Sangoma (healer), but rather a fortune-teller with the powers of a seer to foretell the future and tell what must be done to avoid evil or mishaps. This obviously wasn't a tourist performance and we were asked by our guide not to be too obvious with the camera out of courtesy. Such gatherings are an integral part of community life in isolated, more traditional Zulu villages, although modern culture is rapidly eroding their importance. Amusingly, the presence of Americans was seen as proof of her power as some of her clients travel many thousands of miles to solicit her advice! Hey, maybe that's the reason we had to get to South Africa and just didn't know it!
