Conditions are very variable at McClure. They range from dead
calm, (good for speed runs) to wire twanging, rock and roll turbulence and
beyond.


There are days where cloudbase is high and there is no inversion layer. Cross
country is possible under these conditions and pilots have flown to Sonora,
Yosemite, Mariposa, Merced and outside of Fresno. Friday, on the weekend
previous to the fly-in, a number of pilots landed at the airport in Mariposa and
one continued on, out of Mariposa, and into the valley. Cross country here
features few LZs, lots of tiger country and low mileage.


The conditions that you witnessed at launch were not the normal conditions.
Normally, the launch is turbulent and one must carefully pick the cycle to
launch into.


The LZ is normally very turbulent and one must deal with gusts and turbulence to
make a safe landing. Most of the local pilots land crosswind, down the chute.


Conditions during the fly-in were perfect for a safe fly-in.
