2006 Paragliding Nationals in Sun Valley, Idaho - day six

The results appear here:
http://www.flysunvalley.com/USNPC/results.html.

The forecast called for a deep inversion starting at about launch level, with no
chance of cumulus clouds what so ever. It was colder in town than on top at 9 AM
(42 Vs 49). The heating of the valley floor (10 degrees warmer than the day
before) should provide thermals to 13,000', even with the inversion.

The task committee called an ambitious task out again to the Lost River Valley
just west of the Lost River Range, the range that includes King Mountain. Pilots
would get there through the Trail Creek Canyon and tag the turnpoint at Wildcat
first.

Pilots were supposed to head south after the turnpoint on the west side of the
Lost River Valley and get a 6 km radius turnpoint centered at the Mackey airport
then head back north to LZ at the base of Mt. Borah. A total distance of 104
kilometers. So far no report from the leaders. Forty one pilots had reported in
by 7 PM.

There was plenty of smoke in Sun Valley and Ketchum as the winds were out of the
north at altitude and the big fire is near Stanley to our north. The smoke
clears up a bit as the day goes on.

On Thursday Nichole Mclearn landed way out near the turnpoint far from the dirt
road into Copper Basin. She hiked for hours down the canyon to get to the wrong
side of the river. She took off all her clothes and carried everything across to
the road side. Later, after getting dressed again she, as it got dark, she
started to build a fire in the middle of the road (to keep from lighting up the
forest) to keep warm.  Just as she started the fire (rubbing two boy scouts
together?) a car came along going the opposite direction, but the driver drove
her two hours back to Sun Valley.

The task turned out to be quite tough with only two pilots making goal. The
latest results don't seem to be up on the web site.
