Not bombing out at Bomballa

With the winds coming from slightly north of east, we headed for the Bomballa launch just north of Redhead. It is a slot cut in the woods and not far (a few hundred feet) above the flat rocks just above the ocean below. The wind was coming in at about 10 to 15 mph (hard to say for sure as we were a little protected in the trees and not at the top of a bluff).

The launch is the light colored area in the center of the photo from Rib Hibberd. A high resolution one can be seen by clicking the photo. Clicking on the link above to Google Earth can also provide a good view of the site.

The launch is steeper than Merewether, but you want to make sure that you can get up. The LZ is off to the left of launch and the wind should be coming right down the beach at Dudley as you come in.

You do have to carry your glider a short way in (down hill) to the launch. The club is improving the slot/launch to blend in better with the natural conditions around it.

This is Scott flying the site:

Again, I wouldn't have known to go to this site without the expert guidance of Scott Barrett. If you go to Newcastle to fly, be sure to hook up with the locals to use their local knowledge.
