2006 Paragliding Nationals in Sun Valley, Idaho - day three

The results appear here:
http://www.flysunvalley.com/USNPC/results.html.

With the forecast for 28 knots through the boundary layer and the anemometer at
the top of Baldy already reporting 22 mph at 9 AM, we called the day down in the
LZ at River Run. Later review of the wind data  (http://www.met.utah.edu/cgi-bin/roman/meso_base.cgi?stn=SVB%20
showed a steady wind at 22 mph with gusts to 35 mph at launch. Similar winds are
forecasted for Wednesday. It was good to send people off on their merry way
early.

The complaint to the meet director was rejected and the second day was declared
a valid day. No protest has yet been lodged.

I have reminded pilots that they must take personal responsibility to contact
their own safety committee which was elected by the pilots and voice their
concerns ahead of launch if they feel that the task is not safe or if launch
conditions are unsafe. Their personal evaluation may differ from that of the
safety director and if enough pilots feel that way they could certainly sway the
safety committee. Safety is a subjective decision.

I will encourage the safety committee to review the task and the launch
conditions and make a collective decision if one is required. Otherwise, things
will continue to proceed toward launching and flying the task provided by the
task committee.

It looks like we will have lighter winds on Thursday with a high of 69 degrees (brrr!).
