We were supposed to be traveling today to Palm Springs, but the fires have closed the freeways and the winds are 60+ mph which doesn't go well with a trailer. We are here in Buellton west of Santa Barbara and there is no wind today (nor yesterday) but lots of smoke and a fire nearby. I bicycled over to Los Olivos yesterday from here and saw the fire there five miles from town. It is the bit of smoke to the left in this picture from the New York Times:

This shot was from yesterday. Santa Barbara is the right most small bump out into the Pacific Ocean west of the smoke. Apparently the freeway (101) is not closed but you can't see anything as you get near Oxnard. Interstate 15 is closed in two places.

I spoke from Diane McKenzie in San Bernardino and there is a big fire at Arrowhead not far from Crestline and Marshall. She says it didn't burn there last time so that there is lots of fuel.
