The forecasts this morning didn’t look promising so it was decided over breakfast that today would be a seminar day. After we finished the standard hearty breakfast served promptly at 9am, the first seminar began. Steve Lee headed up this seminar, the topic being wire assisted cliff launches. This is obviously a very important topic as your life is in your wire crew’s hands.

The next featured seminar was a tutorial of airspace charts led by Terry Presley. Terry provided everyone with sectionals and led the discussion using an online sectional from www.skyvector.com .

After a break for lunch, everyone gathered for Kevin Carter’s vario and GPS seminar. Setup and configuration was discussed for 4000 and 5000 series Flytecs, Garmins, and Brauningers.

Finally the Arkansas Air Hogs showed us all how to make Arkansas Windsocks otherwise known as drop streamers. These streamers are biodegradable and can be dropped while on approach over a field to determine wind direction if other indicators are not present.

The lack of flying led a few pilots to fling themselves off the mountain for a sled-run in the calm evening air. Kevin Carter helped a few people out by performing test flights on their gliders. The night was finished off by a nice dinner at a local Vietnamese restaurant that closed for our private party. During dinner, prizes were awarded, appreciation was given, and movies and slideshows of the week’s events were projected up onto a screen.
