Spring in Burketown, a tiny township clinging languidly to the lowest point of the Gulf of Carpentaria in Queensland's far north, brings the chance to see one of the world's most extraordinary natural phenomena.

At dawn on days when the humidity and breezes are right, an enormous tubular cloud known as the Morning Glory rolls in from the sea, stretching across the horizon like a giant white door-stopper before quickly sweeping over the town, furiously sucking up the air and blacking out the sky like a scene from the sci-fi movie Independence Day.
