Unit 1

Course Introduction:

Welcome to a world most people cannot even imagine! As a new pilot you are entering into the education and training involved with a sport unlike any other activity open to man on this planet. You are about to enter the thought process utilized by soaring birds since their existence.

An average skilled hang glider pilot can often “thermal” and ride updraft currents for hours before “making the decision” to come back to earth... sound amazing? Wait until it happens to you!

If you have had some experience hang gliding and are coming to the sport to learn more or relearn the sport we are thrilled that you have come back to what we are sure you have missed. We will teach you in the most thorough, modernized program developed to date.

Hang gliding is often misunderstood by those who have not experienced it. The sport is referred to by many as a “thrill seekers” sport. In reality does not meet that criterion as it applies to the other extreme sports. Speeds of 30 miles per hour are normally considered “fast” in the hang gliding community. Aside from a cool breeze to deal with, the control of the glider is something anyone can do with the effort required to play in a swing set. There are no extreme speeds or strength required for normal flying in this sport. The uncommon peacefulness of the sport and a view that cannot be described those who have not been involved is a hang gliding pilot’s version of “thrill”. If you like pretty pictures and peaceful moments of solitude, you have found your sport!

This manual is not simply about the manipulation of a piece of equipment either. Safety when flying a hang glider is a much bigger picture than “Mechanized methodology”. If you are willing to accept the challenge of learning the skill, mindset and strategy required to become a safe pilot this course will be one of your first tools toward a wonderful new experience.

This course covers the basic flight fundamentals for you to develop your own capabilities flying a hang glider. It also provides beginning training of the physical, mental and judgmental skills that are important in becoming a responsible hang glider pilot.

Your initial introduction to the classroom will be an “Internet class”. You will be emailed (or mailed if you have no access to the internet) a set of questions that will be discussed in this manual. You will be expected to respond on line or via mail to the questions with your understanding of the manual’s information. You will be emailed/mailed back by your instructor with corrections, clarifications and added information. Once you have answered the questions in this manual to the satisfaction of your instructor you will be invited to your first classroom and simulated flight experience. This may be held in a secluded section of a local restaurant or an actual classroom. Barring bad weather conditions you will also go outside the classroom on your first day of class and take lessons in a two dimensional simulator. The information discussed in your online seminar will be discussed in these classes. Also, this will be your first chance to begin to practice the skills necessary to hang glide. Finally and possibly most important you will have a chance to share your knowledge and questions with fellow pilots. Each exercise in the classroom and in the field is designed to teach some of the mental and physical skills required to become a hang gliding pilot. Much more than that, we will be beginning to teach you the mindset required for you to minimize your risk in this sport and handle some special situations.

Understand that as a student each step of the process must be accomplished before you will be allowed to continue to the next step. After your online quiz is satisfactorily completed for example you will generally need to attend two to three classroom/group restaurant sessions with other students to take the Hang 1 and Hang 2 USHPA (United States Hang gliding and Paragliding Association) written test before you move up to the training field exercises. Many schools do not require this much early preparation. Many do not require at least an hour on the simulator prior to the first flight. We know you may be impatient. We also want you to spend “safe” time early on that will give you a certain confidence once all the new sights and sounds of real flying thrill… and maybe distract you!
