Regional Atmospheric Soaring Predictions
... There is a RASP for Victoria, Australia ...
I was hoping to see Dr. Jack's soaring forecasts include Australia. They mostly come about because a local sailplane pilot has the interest, Linux experience, DSL connection, and spare computer required to run the software and do the forecasting. Thankfully such a combination exists in Victoria around the Benalla sailplane club (John Wharington). You'll find their soaring predictions here: http://www.xcsoar.org/rasp/Benalla/standardindex.html and here: http://www.glidingclub.org.au/flying/weather/rasp.xhtml. You'll find more access to Australian flying weather here: http://www.glidingclub.org.au/flying/weather/.
I would love to see these forecasts for New South Wales and Queensland also. Maybe there is a Australian hang glider pilot with the interest.
Dr. Jack is a blessing to the soaring community and the fact that he gives the RASP code out to others to use is very impressive. At the moment the Victoria RASP is down because of problems with the internet service provider. They are blocking the data from NOAA. The latest word is that it is supposed to be back up next week according to Scott Penrose.
More about this and other developments in soaring forecasts soon. In the meantime, check out: http://ozreport.com/weather.php and http://apps.xcskies.com/images/faq.html. Discuss RASPs at the Oz Report forum
