I use Windows Mail, not Outlook, not Thunderbird, not other email clients. I used to use Outlook Express under Windows XP. Vista: Windows Mail is the version of Outlook Express that has been implemented in Vista. Not implemented very well.

It is slow. Very slow. And the reason is the contacts list. I automatically capture all the email addresses of everyone who writes to me. So my contact list is long. Vista: Windows Mail spends a lot of extra time going through that list every time I want to do anything with email.

Utilizing Process Monitor, I drilled down and focused solely on the WinMail.exe process (Windows Mail) in real time, and watched every function call for the registry, memory, disk, O/S, etc. I discovered that every time I opened an email, the WinMail.exe process would create an average of TEN (10) Linear Function Calls to the O/S, for EACH of the 2,225 Contact Folder File...

The total real time processor usage (DELAY) for each Contact to be processed was an average of .0035 Seconds. It doesn't sound like a large amount of time, but multiply 2,225 by .0035 seconds and you will readily see that you have wasted 7.8 Seconds just parsing the same files over and over and over!!!!

I watched in real time while WinMail.exe whittled away 8 seconds every time I used email, and continuously opened and closed the same static contact files over 22,225 times for EACH email I Created, Opened, Replied To, Forwarded, or Web Created. "Reply To" and "Forward" emails created up to 17 function calls and utilized over .0057 seconds for a blistering delay time of 11 seconds. Each of the 2,225 Contact Files were 2KB in size, the smallest default unit size, and contained nothing but a name and email address.
