World Record Encampment - a no show

... The rain in south Texas has kept us away from Zapata. ...

While the Flytec and a Quest Air Dragonfly have been sitting in a trailer at the airport in Zapata since a few days after the Santa Cruz Flats meet in early May in Casa Grande, Arizona, no one has gone down there to put them together or to attempt new world records. Of course, the continuing rain in south Texas, and especially the wet conditions between Carrizo Springs and Uvalde, have dampened our enthusiasm for heading south. The wet ground in this area in particular greatly reduces the height of the cloud base 100 miles out from Zapata making really big distances difficult if not impossible.

Not only is the low lying ground 100 miles north of Zapata a problem, but it has been raining day after day in Zapata, making it difficult to even get a start. There has been little rain 300 miles out going up toward the panhandle and the forecast for the upcoming Worlds in Big Spring looks good. Also the terrain rises 200 miles out to the Edwards plateau, so it is assumed to be drier on the area around Ozona.

Russell Brown should be in Zapata soon and may or may not set up a tug there. He may just pull the trailer with the two tugs north to Leakey for the National Fly-In on August 3rd. The forecast for Uvalde is:
