The World Championships in the time of Coronavirus

What are we going to do to reduce the possibility of the spread of
coronavirus at our Paradise Airsports Nationals, World Championships and
Wilotree Nationals?

As happy as we will be to see each other, during this time let's remind each
other to avoid shaking hands, affectionate hugs and kisses.

First, these are not large events with thousands of people. They are relatively
small gatherings with plenty of room for everyone to stay more than 6' away from
others. Coronaviruses are spread by large droplets (https://emcrit.org/ibcc/covid19
- large droplet transmission COVID-19 transmission can occur via large droplet
transmission (with a risk limited to ~6 feet from the patient)(Carlos del Rio
2/28). This is typical for respiratory viruses such as influenza. Transmission
via large droplet transmission can be prevented by using a standard
surgical-style mask.)

We will arrange check-in so that you can maintain a 6' distance from anyone
else.

If you are sick, you should not be coming to the competition. If you get sick,
you need to stay away from the rest of the people at the competition. If you are
not sick there is no need to wear a mask.

Second, transmission by contact, it is crucial that table surfaces get wiped
down with 70 ethanol or 5% sodium hypochlorite (bleach). This includes the rubber hoses
on the carts. People will be assigned to take care of these tasks. We ask that
pilots and crew members bring additional alcohol wipes, etc. to help clean their
personal surfaces.

Third, hand sanitizer (at least 60% alcohol) will be available in large
quantities.

Fourth, a hand washing station with soap is available at the lavatories.

Fifth, we will have a digital non-touch forehead thermometer. If you develop a
fever you will need to go to the urgent care if it persists. We will measure
anyone who feels that they have a fever.

Sixth, anyone who can't come because they are sick or because their country is
locked down will receive a full refund.

Here is the advice from medical professionals:

Fighting influenza-like illness are no different from what people should be
doing every day to stave off coronavirus and other respiratory diseases.

You have seen the guidance before: Wash your hands
regularly. Cover your nose and mouth when you sneeze. And when you’re sick, stay
home from work or school and drink lots of fluids. The CDC
recommends washing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds after using
the bathroom, before eating and after blowing your nose or sneezing. It also
advises not to touch your eyes, nose and mouth and to clean objects and surfaces
you touch often — a common household cleaner will suffice.

The known symptoms for influenza and covid-19 are nearly identical: fever,
cough, body aches, fatigue and at times vomiting and diarrhea.

Common coronavirus symptoms can include:

— Fever

— Dry cough

— Shortness of breath

— Aching muscles

— Fatigue

Less typical coronavirus symptoms:

— Phlegm buildup

— Headache

— Hemoptysis (coughing up of blood or blood-stained mucus)

— Diarrhea

Symptoms atypical for coronavirus:

— Runny nose

— Sore throat

A runny nose and a sore throat are typical signs of upper respiratory infection. Therefore, those who have bouts of sneezing or get the sniffles likely have the
flu or a common cold.

As the new coronavirus generally affects the lower respiratory tract, most of
those infected exhibit a dry cough, shortness of breath or pneumonia, but not a
sore throat.

Research on the known cases so far suggests that the vast majority, some 80
percent, are mild. Health officials have urged those experiencing mild symptoms
to
self-manage from home with over-the-counter cold and flu aids, rather than
crowding hospital emergency and waiting rooms.

Those experiencing more severe symptoms, such as trouble breathing, lethargy or
a fever that won’t break, should call a doctor. Both the coronavirus and
influenza can cause pneumonia, an infection of the lungs that can be
life-threatening in infants, children and people over 65.

But it is a good idea to call your primary-care doctor if you have both a fever
and a cough, experts said. And if you have shortness of breath, unremitting
fever, weakness or lethargy, it’s definitely time to get in touch with a
health-care professional, they say. Those could be signs of pneumonia, which is
common in severe cases of coronavirus.

The new coronavirus causes little more than a cough if it stays in the nose and
throat, which it does for the majority of people unlucky enough to be infected.
Danger starts when it reaches the lungs.

One in seven patients develops difficulty breathing and other severe
complications, while 6% become critical. These patients typically suffer failure
of the respiratory and other vital systems, and sometimes develop septic shock,
according to a report by last month’s joint World Health Organization-China
mission.
