Saturday flights

Apparently pilots got cut off by the cirrus clouds that you see in
the Satellite photos in the previous article. These weren't forecasted.

Again a whole bunch of pilots went cross country. John Simon, Misael Rosalez,
Rob Clarkson, Mick Howard, Cory Barnwell, and maybe others.

I launched first again, as no one else was ready. A bit later this time at 11:17
given the forecast for a lower cloudbase. The cu's had started popping at
9:30 AM and the sky was full of them.

Again, like the day before, it was a slow climb with a fast drift to 2,800', not
quite able to make it to cloud base.

Taking a 6 km glide to 2,000' south of the chicken coops I found 100 fpm and
drifted for 5 km to 3,700'. Cu's every where.

I was jumping over to the northwest and reading 9 - 10 mph tail wind. Just east
of Center Hill I decided to come back instead of continuing, given the lighter
winds than forecast. I could see jumping from cu to cu to get back as the sky
was full.

Two thermals west of Grass Roots and I got up but didn't get any forward
progress. Pushing forward over swamp land I found 200 fpm at 1,000' AGL over a
bail out field. Two thermals and I was 2 km behind where I started but at 3,800'
instead of 1,000'.

I headed to the chicken coops, but didn't find anything until I was down to
1,200' over houses to the south of them keeping a eye on a bail out field down
wind. Two thermals later and I was right back where I started south of the
chicken coops but now again at 3,800'.

Eight kilometers from Wilotree I had a required glide of 7:1 into a 12 mph head
wind. I was northwest of Mascotte. Since there are a bunch of fields south of
Groveland before Wilotree where I could land I headed into the wind hoping to
make one of those fields or maybe back at the flight park.

I came in over the trees at 400'. Thankfully the wind was south east so I just
came in and landed. I had come in at 500' AGL two days ago and thought that was
pretty marginally. Now 100' less.

Mick Howard turned around at the Turnpike and made it half the way back. The
furthest anyone got was about 73 km, until Cory went 5km further after John and Misael landed in the same field.

This was a completely fun flight pushing against the wind, getting low, checking
possible landing spots, finding lift and getting back up again and again while
being pushed backwards. The air was certainly pleasant and most of the thermals
actually worked, but even when things were repeatedly falling apart it was fun.
The final glide was just shockingly fun
