Explaining the USHPA governance proposal, part 3

This change was never going to be easy, so a half-assed effort
wouldnt have been worth starting. The boards time, however, has been limited
to a few hours of discussion, a few reviewing proposal drafts, and some
individual conversations. The bulk of the effort has been mine and my
committees. The suggestion that if we hadnt worked on this we could have saved
hang gliding is pretty flattering; and of course the idea wasnt to spend a year
working on just one of our challenges. We wanted to see if we could give the
organization a better foundation to work on all of them, for decades into the
future. I'm excited to say I think this initiative will actually do that. The effort, in any event, is mostly done. If the initiative passes, the
transition neednt take a lot of anyones time. The new board, which will be
constituted from members of the old board at the spring meeting, will be able to
get right to work, with monthly meetings. That will already be a huge step
forward from waiting eight months to meet again while the executive committee
handles any emergencies. The first new-style fall meeting ten months from now
(please see the proposal for details) might be a good moment for the new board
and the committee chairs to start a conversation about our committee
architecture, and how it might best evolve to support the new board and the
members most effectively. Https://www.ushpa.org/member/governance-proposal-2018
