Florida Ridge, pre comp

... The US Nationals begin on Saturday ...

We arrived at the Florida Ridge on Thursday night. They had just
spent the day flying getting up to 6,000' at cloud base in front of the front
that was with us as we drove south. Florida has been dry (like it was last year)
and cloud bases have been high and the thermals fully packed.

The winds were a bit strong today out of the west although a dozen or so pilots
flew. It was blue all day and looks like it will be that way tomorrow with a
lighter (10 knots) northwest wind. That should make for an interest task into
the Everglades (unless we go cross wind.

The Florida Ridge is looking great with lots of new trees in the people friendly
areas (not the flight areas). Quest Air sends down three tugs tomorrow morning.
Neal was here towing people today.

We will be using the OzGAP 2005 scoring system as implemented by yours truly in
SeeYou. This is the first time that SeeYou has been used to score a major hang
gliding championship. I wonder what CIVL will say when we have no way to send
them a Race database file at the end of the meet.

I picked up a prototype Wills Wing T2 - 144 at the airport in Orlando on the way
down and Kevin got a chance to fly it this evening. He loved it. I didn't have a
chance to fly it as I was setting up the competition.

He says it rolls progressively and spirals just the right amount. We need to
take the inboard sprogs down one turn and the outboard sprogs down a turn and a
half. Jack Slocum ran over his T2 so he is flying the one I have been flying. He
loves it also. He has been flying the 154 size version.

The T2 - 144 that I'll be flying in the meets is a full race version, with a
Mylar sail, the fatter battens, Mylar inserts (easy as pie to put in), thin
wires (but not too thin), and a few incremental changes that Steve Pearson would
like feedback on.

Almost the whole Guatemalan team is here like last year.  The Brits also.
They've got a van for nine people.
