We are approaching Bingara under wide spread thick dark clouds. Jonny is about
to top out a thermal at 8,900' after climbing at 500+ fpm. I'm one mile behind
him, at 8,500' about to enter the thermal that he just left. The cloud is every
where and just above us. I'm concerned.



Jonny is willing to go 600' higher than I am as we both pull in racing under the
cloud for the turnpoint and the escape to the northwest. Jonny will get the
turnpoint 1000' higher than me 90 seconds before I get there. There was plenty
of lift, but I feel constrained to stay further away from the clouds than Jonny
did.



It is this thousand feet that make all the difference. That is enough altitude
to get Jonny over to the lift rising on higher ground after a long glide. I will
land before goal.



Lukas Bader who was just behind me and at my altitude when he took the
turnpoint, stopped and worked light lift when I went out to find more and landed
and came in twenty minutes behind Jonny. Jonny's two minute advantage had turned
into twenty minutes, because he was willing to cut it closer.
