Collecting the past

Photo is live.

I am pleased to share this never before seen new version of the famous
"Photo-Fly" of a gathering of early hang gliding pioneers in 1971 and shot by
Doug Morgan. It was digitally reproduced from the original color separations
donated by Joe Faust in the early 1980s.

In the past year I have received donations from Phil Richards, Joe & Kris Greblo,
John La Torre, and Keith Nichols. The year before I received 6 large cartons of
bound books willed to me by Dan Poynter and in 2013 Dan sent me a substantial
amount of material. Vincene Muller shipped a large box to me in the last few
years and Chris McCluer, John Morse, and Mark Vander Galien made donations.
There are others I have failed to recall for this post and I apologize that I
don't have more complete notes. My most recent shipment came from David Van Wie
of Minnesota. Along with a very large box of books there were several binders of
perfectly preserved early 1970s plans including several I had never heard of and
others I was aware of but had never seen. Just last month I bought a set of
VJ-11 plans from Mike Wilson of Branson Missouri so my plans collection made a
nice leap just in recent weeks. Images of the VJ-11 plans and others can be seen
at https://photos.app.goo.gl/6KCRGl0OPJ5grq4J2. Scroll to the bottom for the
most recent added images.

Here is a list of plans I now have. Vortex, Kilbo-Plan, The Delta Sail Wing
Glider and the Eclipse both by Ronald Lovejoy from January 1973, Sky Surfer
Model 201 from Aircraft Unlimited, Batso, Icarus II and V, Soaring Hawk - a new
to me, hang cage (parallel tubes) poly sail design made with "clothes poles"
(what the hell ARE they?), Cliffhanger, Valkyrie as shown in the image - I also
have the original full size blueprint style donated by Frank Colver, Velderain
Standard (drawn by Richard Miller?), Cat Tail 2 by Steve F Johnson, Lilienthal
1894 Glider drawn in 1967 by Charles Newcomb National Air and Space Museum, Jobe
Standard - detailed kit assembly instructions April 1972, Hang Loose by Jack
Lambie and drawn by Mark Lambie who recently passed away, Quicksilver October
1973, Grant Smith Standard, Seagull III 1973 - stand alone and not the Low and
Slow version, Swooper Too from Chuck's Glider Supplies, Cronkite 1972, Flexi
Flier 1973, Sunbird Performer Standard 1974, Willi Muller Standard, Bat Glider
published by Jim Foreman from photos and drawings provided by Richard Miller of
his Bamboo Butterfly, Free Flight Standard 1973, Hall's Hawk 1974, Whitney's
Flying Wing Standard, Irv Culver's hang glider drawings - not quite what you
would call a plan set, Volmer Jensen's VJ-11 hang glider with control surfaces
and True Flight book and Standard planset. The earliest plans of a bi-conical
wing hang glider in my collection are Barry Palmer's original drawings and logs
chronicling his several gliders starting in late 1961. The plans drawn by John W
Dickenson and mailed to Rogallo in 1964 are only prints of scanned originals.
The Dickenson Wing was the "common ancestor" which resulted in the ubiquitous
progeny mis-named "Standard Rogallos" of the early years.
