On Line Contests (OLC's), Leonardo

... Hiding out in the paragliding forum ...

http://paraglidingforum.com/modules.php?name=leonardo&op=index_full

First a note on the HOLC. Andrej Kolar at SeeYou writes to remind me that it is
not necessarily their fault that SeeYou doesn't work directly with the HOLC (it
does work with the OLC for sailplanes) as there is a problem identifying the
hang gliding manufacturers and models in the HOLC. Getting all that coordinated
remains a problem.

Now, on to Leonardo. You'll find it hiding over at the paragliding forum
(see URL above) so it doesn't immediately come to mind if you are a hang glider
pilot. I scan for the latest news in the paragliding forum, so I'm familiar with
it. Leonardo also has a competition version for meet organizers (http://ozreport.com/11.042#2)
and I'm familiar with that.

If you check out Leonardo (see the URL above) you'll notice right away that it
has an extensive menu, lots of menu items. This is a good sign of its wide
functionality. If you are interested in knowing the total distance you've flown
Leonardo is the on-line contest for you. You get a detailed page of your flight
statistics. Just click Main Menu, My Stats, after you login.

To register, click Main Menu, Open an Account. This also creates an account for
you on the Paragliding forum which shares registration with Leonardo.

To upload a flight click Main Menu, Submit Flight. Browse for your IGC file.
Leonard is smart and most likely knows the name of your take off. It uses your
IGC file to locate your take off from its site guide/database. If it's not there
you can enter it later (and thereby update the Leonardo site guide).

Enter your glider manufacturer and model and Leonardo will keep track of your
gliders so that you can just choose from your personal list of gliders next
time.

Got photos or a web page that relates to this flight? You can link those up with
the flight also.

Want to see all your flights? Click Main Menu, My flights. Want to view only
hang glider flights by default, or see your stats in Imperial units, click Main
Menu, My settings.

And what about the contest? Click XC League, OLC. You can then click a series of
tabs to see how folks are doing relative to each other in numerous categories.
You can further divide up the results by glider type, country, and date. Use the
tabs on the left hand side under the menu. The one item that didn't seem to work
was all glider types.

Leonardo apparently doesn't check your IGC file's G record to determine if your
track log has been corrupted or modified after it was uploaded to your computer.
The HOLC is supposed to check for this, but it didn't seem to. The other two
OLC's that I've reviewed do check the G record.

You'll find extensive information about each flight, Click Main Menu, My
Flights, then the little green ball on the right hand end of the record of your
flight. You can look at the details of anyone's flights, along with pictures if
they have included them. Click Pilots, Pilots, then click on a pilot name,
Pilot's flights.

Leonardo is eminently discoverable. Just click the various menu items and
whatever item in a dialog box that turns your cursor into a glove and you'll
find a new feature or way to navigate through the background database.

Leonardo is every where. It is not just implemented on the Paragliding Forum.
You can find different versions of it on different servers serving national
competitions. Click Main Menu, Project Info. The DHV has recently implemented
Leonardo on their server for the
German/Austrian (DHV) Cross Country Contest. The DHV uses another software
system for their "international" contest. More on that later.

One funny thing is that information on one Leonardo implementation isn't shared
with other implements, so we get little Leonardo islands. Will they all come
together later? That big database in the sky?

Leonardo is easy, fun to use, provides great views of the underlying flight
data, and is popular with paraglider pilots at least. The German version looks
well subscribed. Will it become the dominate contest format?
