The forecast was for isolated thunderstorms and variable winds ...
another hard day for task setting. The winds on the balloon flight showed some
light NE-NW under 2000m but moderate SE-SW above . A 57kms race task to Tamwoth
City goal (in the middle of the Tamworth CTA !) Was set via the special event
airspace corridor. Mostly blue conditions and light climbs greeted the 150
pilots on course after the 14.30 start gate. A wall of Cu-Nimbs sat 150kms to
the south all day long and kept pilots carefully watching the sky ahead. 13
pilots made goal and 15-20 were just short. Petra was in the top places again -
she will now be leading the event after 3 tasks - simply sensational !

Our gaggle spent about 1 hour over the 1st TP at about 1000 m (and
the ground is about 370 m), in 0’s mostly, with the occasional 0.5 m/s, followed
by a –0.5 m/s. People were yelling at each other, turning all sorts of
directions, and generally being very rude to each other in the game to get the
most lift out of the “thermal” (I hesitate to even call it that, it was so
random). There was at least 1 midair; I heard it and looked down to see the
gliders separating, with one glider with a big cravatte (or broken lines, it was
hard to tell), spiralling down until he threw his reserve. It opened OK and he
landed in the sportsfields in a tree next to the river, and was apparently OK.
The other person continued flying so I guess their glider was OK too.

There were multiple mid-air bumps, at least two full-on mid-air
collissions, cursing in at least five different languages, road rage and lots of
spins from trying to work the light lift. I was INTO it--fully prepared to
mid-air rather than leave the "lift." It was stupid beyond any reasonable
definition of the word, but I was in the air. I watched gliders lawn-dart all
around me with the thought, "Vegemites!"
