Five Candidates for World Air Games 2009

CIVL has received a bid from France for the Class 1 Worlds in
2009

Jean-Marc BADAN <> writes:

Sites near London (United Kingdom), Melbourne (Australia), Moscow
(Russia), Odense (Denmark), and Turin (Italy) have been selected today by the
Executive Board of the FAI - The World Air Sports Federation - as the candidates
for the World Air Games 2009.

These candidates were selected on the basis that their bid applications
demonstrated that they possess the proper capacity and vision for hosting the
event.

So the questions are: How do the WAG relate to the World
Championships? Is CIVL going to send any real competition pilots to evaluate the
site for the purposes of hang gliding and paragliding (the answer I have
received from the consulting firm so far is No)?

I can't imagine holding a hang gliding competition in the UK. The Brits leave
for France for their nationals. Bright is near Melbourne, so maybe that is a
possibility, although you could do it any where in Australia it seems to me. I
wonder how far from the main bid winning city you can wonder to find an
appropriate venue.

I doubt that Moscow or Odense would be appropriate sites for hang gliding.
Although I'm sure that there is a good spot someplace in Italy.

And finally, why would any hang glider pilot want to participate in the WAG?
What is the attraction? Previously the WAG have been a big bust especially for
hang gliding and paragliding. Terrible site selection (done for political
purposes).
