Altitude Restrictions

I have written about the issue of altitude restrictions in competition and the problems that come with these restrictions when it comes to using flight computers like the Flytec 6030 and Brauniger Compeo+ (they are exactly the same). You can review those articles here and here.

The cause for concern is that these instruments display pressure altitude while the scoring software uses GPS altitude. If there is a difference between the pressure altitude displayed to the pilot and the altitude scored, then pilots using these instruments could be penalized for infractions that they didn't think they were making (or maybe weren't actually making).

Also the scoring software could be making adjustments to the recorded pressure and/or GPS altitude that change it from the values actually found in the track log.

Here is what SeeYou does:

Flight recorders such as Bräuniger Compeo/Competino and Flytec 6030 are supposed to record standard pressure altitude (1013.25mBar) in the IGC files. Given that »Automatically adjust altitude to > QNH« is set, the pressure altitude at landing point is compared with the altitude of the ground at the landing point. This difference is then applied to the whole flight and all pressure altitudes are corrected with this difference.

I would assume that FS doesn't do this as it doesn't know the actual landing altitude.

As pilots are getting punished for real or imaginary infractions (or for just following their flight instruments) I would like to know if other pilots have noticed this problem (i.e. the display and the GPS track log not being in sync). Have you also found this to be true for just stand alone GPSes?

If you carry a 3D GPS and a 6030 or Compeo+, are the altitudes in sync? What about the track logs? In sync with each other, in sync with your memory of what you saw on the screens?
