The 2008 World Human Vehicle Speed Challenge is on at Battle Mountain, Nevada. See: http://www.recumbents.com/wisil/whpsc2008/pictures.htm. These guys are trying hard to beat the current speed record for a human powered vehicle on flat ground, no wind assist. There've been no records as yet this year, but speeds of 70mph+ (110km+) are being regularly achieved (the record is 81mph, set in 2002). This is hard core stuff.
