On Sunday, the day after the meet started the sky was blue and the day gorgeous. The first isolated cu's started popping around 1 PM and they were very well formed and already getting vertical. It wasn't long before the sky filled with cu's and by 7 PM the OD was on its way. Now as I write this the showers have been heavy on and off with lots lightening and thunder for the last few hours.

Robin Hamilton was out early trying to set the FAI triangle distance record. Given the cloud and over development situation it would have been tough to do.
We wrapped up the contest on Saturday with a prize giving dinner, and participation from the folks in town who helped us out. Big Spring has been very helpful and without this help it would not be possible to have as much fun as we do here at this competition. Especially Jim Little the airport manager and Terry Wolcott, the leader of the volunteers. I hope that other towns can be as helpful to hang gliding competition as Big Spring.
The pilots appeared to enjoy this competition greatly. The weather was incredible so it was hard to mess up with the task calling. This place is just amazing. Nothing comes close to Big Spring in my experience. East Texas comes as close as anything else.
Compare Big Spring to the site of the next Worlds, Laragne. Laragne is a very beautiful place and the flying there is terrific, but it just doesn't come close to Big Spring flying. It is safe here with great thermals and a lack of turbulence. And you don't have to be concerned about the launches.
We do these competition for fun, it gives us a reason to fly with our buddies and puts a sharp focus on our flying. I personally had a great time and going for 215 miles on a task couldn't have been more fun, especially when I flew with three of my flying friends.
If you want to have a good time, check out Big Spring next year.
