Big Spring Internationals
Beautiful cu's then over development. Most of the pilots showed up today and the hangar was full as pilots set up their glider and we put the Dragonflies in there also.
The cu's started around noon and the sky was as inviting as it gets here, and it gets very inviting. This is the practice day, and the tug pilots were out at lunch so folks didn't start launching until after 2 PM.
Dustin, the two Jeff's and Chris Gibisch launched and had a good flight. The cu's were building and it looked like things might blow up. The pilots who had all headed north turned around and headed back for the airport. Those of us at the airport saw the gust front coming from the south indicated by the rising dust.
Jeff Shapiro came in and got into the hangar when there wasn't any wind to speak of. But the other three pilots were still out there and now the gust front was very close. Shapiro headed out in his truck to got after Dustin. We looked up and there were Jeff O'Brien and then Chris above the airport. The winds were now 35 mph with blowing dust everywhere.
A bunch of us ran out to the interior field to get under Jeff and Chris and grab their wires after they landed. Just before Jeff landed the wind reduced about ten mph and he had a fine landing and we grabbed his wires after he came down. Chris landed and three of us were able to get to him quickly and bring the glider back against the winds. Dustin landed safely behind some trees north of the airport.
It turns out that Kraig Coomber brought the wrong glider, a LiteSport instead of a LiteSpeed. Thankfully Mike Williams had his backup Litespeed S5 and made it available to Kraig. I helped him and Glen Volk out with bags of shot.
The showers started at around 6 PM. It apparently hasn't rained here since soon after the Worlds last year. It does look pretty dry around here. We'll see if this rain does anything to dampen down the strong lift that has been around here.
