Forbes, the practice day
The Vandenberg hotel is full of pilots and we're all eating thin sandwich steaks off the barbie. Everyone has had a great time flying today in the light wind conditions with the super big, super soft, super strong thermals to well over 7,000' MSL. All the Dragonflies were operating. The tows were uneventful.
With light winds at the airport, it was sometimes unclear which direction to launch, but it really didn't matter, as it was all so light. Landings were a bit more exciting at times and pilots had to rely on their typically skimpy landing skills, not on the nice head winds, to save their landings (mine was mercifully perfect, after I circled the field about twenty times (there was so much lift, it truly was hard to get down).
We have a good number of lesser experience young women pilots here who will be towing and practicing in the morning and evenings. It is great to see them interested in the sport and Bobby Bailey is taking special care of them. They have also additional instructors here to work with them. Juda from Russia has three years experience and a new small Aero glider with a fin. She towed this evening behind Bobby and did well.
