Pre-Europeans in Greifenburg - task four, day five
... Cancelled not stopped, after all. ...
The Results
Daily News:
Day 5 results (task 4): The task was stopped 1hr 55 minutes after the first start gate opened due to the heavy storms on course near Lienz which had developed extremely quickly. There were reports of pilots going to land being hit by hail and seeing lightning in the vicinity after the task was stopped.
Robert (meteorologist) was watching the radar for developing storms and Wolfgang communicated with air marshals in the vicinity to make a swift decision and then telephoned team leaders to let them know. Surprisingly, no pilots bicycled their legs in the air as is common when a task is stopped, and which Wolfgang announced for pilots to do at the initial briefing. Consequently some pilots did not hear of the task being stopped and six pilots who were lucky enough to be ahead of the storm actually flew the 188km to goal.
Official complaints from the Austrian team and some German members were received about the task being scored when the task was stopped and a mandatory start gate had been used. No results for the task were published and the complaint was upheld, so the task for the day was not valid.
