This competition has been quite challenging for the pilots as this
is was the first official competition ever organised in Chile. As well as for
me, being a young meet director and having to deal mostly with experienced
pilots who fly well, but never participated in a comp and didnt really
understand what was a Meet Director or what entailed to be in a Cat. 2 FAI
Event.
30 Pilots from 6 nationalities and the sports class was well represented. We
have had tasks every day up to 161 Kms for the flex and 88Kms for the Sports
Class so thats 6 tasks total. The flying conditions were not easy though as
this is not plane and simple ridge racing has you could expect it to be.
The updated final results after we adjusted them for the pilots who landed to
assist the pilot who did the tumbling on Task 1:

There was 1 fatal accident (collision with a free flying PG pilot who is
deceased and the hang glider competition pilot who is still in the hospital, but
out of danger) on training day and two incidents (tumbling on Day 1 and blown
take off on Day 2, luckily resulting in no injuries what so ever). I have just
finished to file the accident reports with CIVL.

This was my first South American culture experience and I have to say that this
has been the most amazing free flight experience of my life. I have never met
such beautiful people inside and out. So warm, welcoming, generous, humble
people and so loving and caring about each other. Bonds were made straight form
the go between all pilots from the various nationalities present at the meet.
The way they cared about the injured pilot going at the hospital every day and
chipping in for his plane ticket so he could be transferred back for surgery in
Santiago etc. was just amazing.
I would like to thank all the pilots and partners involved. The whole staff, The
local organisation Club Alas Delta Deportivo, Viente de Frente and my good
friend Gerardo Rocha who won the sports class, Christian Cid
(christiancid.com),
XC Magazine and Icaro 2000, The City of Iquique, Airtribune and Elena, Brett XC,
and Atout Vents (co organiser of the event)
We hope to see many more pilots from many more countries for the second edition
in 2017 which we hope will also be the first National Chilean Championship
(Open).
