The Vibram FiveFinger shoes are called barefoot shoes. But with all that fabric
around (left, right, top) each toe and your foot, they are not really barefoot.
If you like barefoot try the Huarache sandals of the Mexican Native American
Tarahumara. You can find some more information here:

I bought a kit in Germany at
http://www.voycontigo.de/huarache-sandals/?force_sid=23a9c08622db6d8c09be03fbf39cf484.
I cut and assembled them and I use them for running. I did not fly with them
yet.
Here you can buy them in the US: http://xeroshoes.com or

Of course, I am quite aware of the Tarahumara Indians having
listened to
Born to Run as we drove across the country a few years ago when the book
first came out. That's what got me started looking for barefoot shoes (that and
the fact that I like to go barefoot). I wanted to find shoes that could work in
my harness when I had to fly in difficult areas like Texas.
I have two pairs of Xero Shoes. One from a kit and one pre-made. I have flown
with them. They are still too big. (I realize that it is possible to cut down
the kit ones, at least, but I originally cut them to just fit my feet, and the
reason that they are too big now is that tightening the strings to keep them on
leaves a large area in the heel.) The the string from the toes on the kit has
pulled out of the sole. I've fixed it twice. The side loop on the pre-built one
tore out. I put in a new hole. The pre-built ones still don't stay on. (Yes, I
will continue to work on them.)

I had tried the "toe" shoes, but my feet are the wrong shape. What
I found were "minimalist" shoes. I have a lot less knee and foot pain with them.
The Merrell seem to have better arch support for me over the New Balance ones. I
found them at Sierra Trading Post.
The Merrells, which I purchased for the same reason, are too
narrow, hurt my feet and dont fit in the harness.
My feet are the wrong shape also (curved under fourth and fifth toes). I had to
find the correct Vibram FiveFingers shoes as the previous two pairs I purchased
did not work. I had to work with the current shoes a tiny bit to make them work.
Now the ones I have are fabulous.
