Given the obvious (though subtle) aerodynamic improvements that raked wing tips
provide, I'm sure that in the near future all the main hang glider manufacturers
will offer these kind of wingtips. I know that Wills Wing is also about to
introduce this new option (I got in touch with Steve Pearson just to get their
opinion and to share experiences, wherefore I am very grateful). Their ability
to achieve high product reliability and quality is guaranteed.

Regarding Icaro 2000, they already have it as option.

Composite Rakedtips, however, are designed to be incorporated into gliders that
already exist. They also allow customization, not only aesthetic considerations,
but in sizes and degrees of flexibility. On the website I try to explain the key
factors that affect Composite Rakedtips configuration and behavior. Anyway, we
clearly still have much to learn about the possibilities of wingtip devices.

Yon and I exchanged some emails discussing development and flight
testing of raked tips. Yon’s composite configuration is unique and may have some
advantages for durability and retrofitting on older gliders, and the photos he
provided certainly look nice. Our configuration remains a laminated foam/fabric
sandwich with carbon rods as stiffeners.

Sails produced before the end of January 2014 will have to be modified to add
Velcro to secure the tips. We don’t have a general release date yet but I expect
them to be available by the end of February.

In my experience, the differences in flight behavior are subtle may not be
readily apparent to all pilots. I find that the stall angle of attack is
increases slightly, and that controllability and sink rate with VG activated
improves slightly. All of these effects are limited to the slow end of the speed
range within a few mph of minimum sink.
