We’ve got some great data on our sport to play with too. Maybe not
always as much as we’d like, but pilots have been logging flight distances,
locations and glider makes and models on the UK XC League since 2005.

It’s a treasure trove of information on thirteen thousand, nine hundred flights,
spread over eight and a half years. As an analyst, I couldn’t resist. How much
have XC distances grown over the past eight years? Which pilots and gliders have
flown the furthest? Which have been the top clubs?

It turns out 2013 has been quite a special year! Here’s average open distance,
for flights over 20km, each year since 2005. The width of the bars is number of
flights recorded. Average distance has increased every year since 2009, peaking
at over 60km this year.
