I was watching this "gimbal" 2-axis stabilization system for drone
copters, and I was thinking of using it on my glider. How will it look like if I
put it on the keel and saw the movement of the glider in different way. It took
some time before I found the right combination which can be handheld and worked
on its own with out connecting it to the GPS and compass of a drone copter.
I found a friend here, who works with it and was willing to lend it to me for
few days to play with it. Friday called for a nice day to fly and many pilots
from Slovenia got together to fly at Kovk in Vipava valley. I put my camera on
to this gimbal and fixed it with duck tape to the keel.
The result, surprised me as well. I think this is the best way to show the
newcomer what the glider is doing in the air in combination with our body
movement. Flying got quite difficult sometimes as you can see in the video,
ridge running was not smooth so it is nice to see how much input we have to make
to fly our gliders straight. People watching us from the ground think that we
are only hanging up in the air making turns with little work. Well, this video
tells a different story. I don't think this is necessarily a way forward for
filming our sport, I still like the fixed mount, but it is a good way to show
what we do in the air. Hope you will enjoy it.
