Serial News – Porterville Serial Challenge

Following Robbie Whittall's lead, we've included this new "Serial Class" event (no prototypes, "comp"-rated gliders or anything above DHV 2-3). No self-modifications or "tweaking" will be allowed; and gliders will be checked (regularly, and randomly) against the factory standard. Certification stickers are compulsory (DHV- AFNOR- or SHV-).

A special feature of this event is the inclusion, for inexperienced, low airtime pilots, advice from volunteer senior pilots on safety, task-planning tips and pre-flight XC-guidance.

This almost back-to-back dual-event arrangement seems to have enticed many of the world's leading pilots to bring a 'second' glider for the chance of extra Cat 2 points. It will also give the opportunity for many (those who prefer not to fly prototypes or very advanced wings) to compete on a more level playing field with the usual leaders. Realistic positioning can be expected, and this will be determined by flying skill, experience and airmanship - not by the type of glider one can afford, or the level of safety one is prepared to sacrifice.
