Two recent research studies have implications for instructors
teaching hang gliding. The first one has demonstrated that sleep has the
function of consolidating long term memory. That is, disregarding the amount of
intensive practice an animal experiences, the animal must sleep to consolidate
(actually choose to consolidate or not) the experiences in long term memory.
Given the amount of flying skills one must learn and the limited capacity and
attention to absorb lessons, sleep and downtime must be factored into any
training program. Programs promising quick results have to be realistic.

Also, there seems to be limit of how much flying skill an individual can attain
based on the inherent variability of response in our neurology (we are human and
make mistakes, some are just more human!). This article seems to suggest that
high levels of skill consistency (reliably shaving off that last minute in the
10 K run) in a particular domain requires even more effort than the earlier
steps in training. This is why equipment choices and comprehensive training are
so important. Flying like a champ is hard enough without having the fundamentals
down pat.
