Dragonfly Towing

Your trike and dragonfly time is worthless. By 2008, get your
private pilot's license and  N number your tugs and by 2010, a towing
exemption controversy.

I went to Zach, because he's the local Zen master when it comes to FAR's. Yes,
you can be paid as a private pilot towing unpowered ultralights.

Zach said one of the big changes is that the FAR's now say Gliders or Unpowered
Ultralights where they used to say just Gliders. So where before a hang glider
was in the same category as a banner (anything that's not a glider), it's now
considered the same as a glider.

Here's the breakdown:

61. 113 Private pilot privileges

61. 69 Tow pilot requirements

91. 309 Glider towing rules

61. 113 What you can do as a Private Pilot.

Section (a) (it's a mouth full, so I've chopped out the important bit just below
this)

(a) Except as provided in paragraphs (b) through (g) of this section, no person
who holds a private pilot certificate may act as pilot in command of an aircraft
that is carrying passengers or property for compensation or hire; nor may that
person, for compensation or hire, act as pilot in command of an aircraft.

(a) Except as provided in paragraphs (b) through (g) of this section. You can't
be hired except (b) -> (g)

So if you're doing anything outlined in b->g, you can be hired.

(g) A private pilot who meets the requirements of Sec. 61.69 may act as pilot in
command of an aircraft towing a glider or unpowered ultralight vehicle.

Towing hang gliders falls under this, so if you're doing it in accordance with
61.69 (aka: legally), you can be paid.

It's that section (a) "Except" that's the kicker. You can't be paid, except if
you're towing unpowered ultralights.

61. 113

61. 69

91. 309

Regarding your hours in the Dragonfly before all this came about:

61. 52 Use of aeronautical experience obtained in ultralight vehicles.

(b) A person may use aeronautical experience obtained in an ultralight vehicle
to meet the provisions of §§61.69 and 61.415 (e).

There's that 61.69 again. Glider and unpowered ultralight vehicle towing:
Experience and training requirements.

That's the one that spells out the 100 hour rule.

(2) Has logged at least 100 hours of pilot-in-command time.
