Trim at Landing

Stephan Penfold writes:

This is a really good video of my favorite landing technique. It
really helps me time the flare.

Basically, set up with the right amount of VG to give a reasonable trim speed. I
like about a 1/3, but many will prefer 1/4 VG.

Get on the uprights early and keep speed on.

Into the ground effect, you'll find yourself allowing the uprights to come
forward, which bleeds off speed.

When you no longer feel the uprights wanting to move forward, you're at trim.
Pause and FULL COMMITTED flare.

The video shows the glider at the trim point, as the pilot demonstrates by
taking his hands off the uprights - the base bar no longer wants to move forward
and the glider is in trim.

To be clear, you don't have to let go of the uprights - just recognize the trim
point by the absence of basebar pressure. The letting go is just for
demonstration purposes.

The reason why I like this technique is that it helps in light or nil wind
conditions. When the ground appears to be moving fast, we are tempted to slow
the glider by pushing out, with the result that the flare has no energy left.

Instead of judging the speed over the ground, concentrate on how the glider is
flying. When the glider is in trim, it's time to flare regardless of the speed
over the ground. It really helps make landings much more consistent by giving
the pilot an objective and unchanging standard to judge the timing of the flare,
rather than using the ground speed, which will be different for each landing.
