2019 Cross Country 101 Clinic

We have two women and three men in our cross country clinic.

This is Katherine Brackett finishing up her pack up after landing out in a
pilot's choice field (not one of our goal/turnpoints) along with all the rest of
the pilots and Mick, the mentor, except for Tim Conover who kept heading south
and landed at the Seminole Glider Port.

The week is forecasted to be dominated by north winds and for the first few days
at least lots of non cumulus clouds. After a detailed pilot meeting with lots of
discussion about how and why soarcasting models differ in their predictions, we
hauled everyone down to the south end to launch in 10 mph north northeast winds.
The sky was blue over the north end of the field and to the north. The sky was
exhibiting thick overcast to the south, the downwind direction.

We had laid out a task that had four LZ's.  They could land close by like
on day 1 (3 km), they could go about twice as far (7.3 km), The next designated
LZ was a big jump of 10.3 km to the intersection of highway 474 and 33 assuming
that the students could find anything to circle in. Then hope against hope
another jump to the intersection of Dean Still and highway 33 another 13.1 km.
The extra LZ's were there just in case the day turned out better than
forecasted.

Bobby Bailey, Tim, and Jim Prahl towed the students (and Mick) up to 4,000'
while I went on chase.  Mike Duffy was off first and he looked awfully
small at 4,000'. He headed directly south and ended up in a field over 9 km from
Wilotree Park. This field proved too attractive to the other pilots and one by
one even though they were high enough to continue, they landed there.

We got on the radio to tell Tim Conover to keep flying after he launched last.
He came over high and made it 14 km to the Seminole Sailplane Port.

The students are gaining confidence and experiencing landing out. We may have a
too windy day tomorrow, but it looks good after that.
